Although there are some traumatic incidents we naturally recover and move on from, other events in our lives can prove to be so traumatic or frightening they can affect us for years to come. Such events can include: a serious illness, accident or medical emergency, being attacked, being bullied or psychologically, physically or sexually abused. Trauma can also be induced by witnessing a grave misfortune happen to someone else.
If you have experienced one of these traumatic events then you may find the effects are long lasting and have held you back from living the life you long to lead. Traumatic incidents can create long lasting negative beliefs in the mind of the sufferer. For example if you have been sexually abused or raped you may find it difficult to form relationships with others, be fearful of people who show you any sort of attention and find it difficult to trust even those closest to you. What’s more you might find yourself constantly suffering from seemingly untriggered attacks of negative emotions which don’t seem to have been provoked by anything, as well as flashbacks, panic and nightmares.
At worst, if you are experiencing the following symptoms you may be suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder include: re-experiencing parts of the trauma, hyper-vigilance, avoiding anything that might trigger a memory of the trauma, seemingly inexplicable physical signs such as pain, nausea, dizziness, shaking and excessive sweating. If you are concerned that you have PTSD you might want to visit your GP.
Treatments for Trauma and PTSD
Although the psychological effects of some traumatic events pass by themselves, the effects of some trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder need treatment. Cognitive Hypnotherapy can be a very helpful process for resolving symptoms from trauma in a short amount of time, with clients often reporting how surprised they were that they felt things change after 1 or 2 sessions.
